About the University – main features

The Wyższa Szkoła Humanistyczno – Ekonomiczna in Włocławek is a non-state-owned college founded in 1995 by the Włocławskie Towarzystwo Naukowe.
The College offers courses at the bachelor’s degree, engineer’s (on the Faculty of Environment Protection and the Computer Science Faculty) master’s degree and post-graduate levels. The Wyższa Szkoła Humanistyczno-Ekonomiczna in Włocławek offers courses in the following faculties: administration, economy, computer science, Polish philology, sociology, history, environment protection, pedagogics, nursing and physical training. Within each faculty course there are certain specialties. The College offers master’s degree courses in pedagogics and history. Three faculties: Pedagogics, Polish Philology and Environment Protection obtained an accreditation from the National Accrediting Commission; the Faculty of Pedagogics is in the process of obtaining the accreditation from the National Accrediting Commission. Faculty of Nursing was granted a positive evaluation from the National Accreditation Committee of Medical Education.

The College also offers a wide range of post graduate courses. The mission of WSHE is to provide its students with a comprehensive education in the field of humanities and economics, linguistics and computer science, based on modern programmes designed by renown specialists. The College – apart from its educational activities – carries out a wide range of scientific research. Within almost nine years of its operations, the Wyższa Szkoła Humanistyczno-Ekonomiczna in Włocławek have hosted and organized more than 70 international and country-wide conferences, seminars, scientific sessions and open lectures.

 
At the beginning of 1997 the College launched a wide range of publishing activities. Books edited by the Wyższa Szkoła Humanistyczno – Ekonomiczna include both books and publishing series for library use. Publishing series for library use published by the WSHE include: Zeszyty Naukowe WSHE, Debiuty Naukowe WSHE, Wykłady Otwarte WSHE. Twice a year the College publishes „Vladislavia. Gazeta Semestralna”. So far the College have published more than 100 publications from many branches of science.
Also, the College cooperates in fields of teaching and research with foreign schools, among others, with the Academy of Labour and Social Relations in Moscow, The University of Humanities in Smolensk, the Polish-French Community thanks to which the students have opportunities to hold practical trainings in the Polish Library in Paris, and also with 19 higher schools - members of the Pôle universitaire européen de Toulouse Midi-Pyrénées. In the academic year of 2002/2003 the College obtained the ERASMUS CARD, granted by the European Commission for years 2003/2004-2006/2007. Within the frames of this programme, the WSHE began cooperation with some higher colleges from abroad: Universidade Nove de Lisboa (Portugal), the Universita di Genova in Italy, the University College of Boras (Sweden), the University of Cantabria (Spain), Ankara University (Turkey), the Dumlupinar University (Turkey) and the Economic University in Sofia (Bulgaria).
The WSHE takes part in consultations aimed at obtaining an application within the Leonardo da Vinci programme and the programme of the Norwegian government called LINKING UP FOR MOBILITY IN EUROPE. WSHE is also actively involved in the SOCRATES LINGUA project. The European Commission will announce its final decision whether it has been accepted later in the year 2005.

 
 
Students of the Wyższa Szkoła Humanistyczno-Ekonomiczna are active members of the college’s internal organizations: the Students’ Council, The College Club of the Academic Sports Association, The Polish Students’ Union, the Academic Choir Arioso, The Students’ Theatre called Teatr Mocnych Wrażeń and in scientific circles available in all faculties. The Students’ Council of the WSHE is an active member of the Students’ Association of Non-state-owned College Students MONSSUN.
The College has its own system of financial support for students. The WSHE rewards its best students and those taking part in social activities in favour of the WSHE with a wide range of scientific scholarships and the Rector’s awards for excellent results in studies. They can also apply for social scholarships and the so-called emergency support. 

 
 
 
The College has its own teaching base, among others, at 3 Piwna St., where there is the Rector’s Office, an auditorium for 350 attendants and the Main Library of the WSHE. Faculties of Economy and Environment Protection as well as inter-faculty units: the Department of Foreign Languages, the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Physical Training own a building offering space of 2.874 m2 (Collegium Minus), with classrooms, laboratories (a modern, multimedia classroom for foreign language studies, a chemical laboratory), five computer labs and food and beverage facilities for students. In 2001 a new six-floor building (Collegium Novum) covering a total working space of 4.000m 2 was put into operation for teaching and research purposes. The venue meets all technical standards of the higher education level. In the building there are modern classrooms and conference halls equipped with air-conditioning system, audio-video and a computer networks. The building houses the three remaining faculties: Administration, Humanities and Pedagogics. At the end of last year the College purchased another building in the centre of Włocławek located at Plac Wolności. It is designed to serve the teaching needs of the College’s a new unit – the Faculty of Public Health. In the building there will be a new seat of the Main Library of the WSHE, which, apart from an impressive book collection with more than 35.000 volumes, grants its readers access to multimedia publications with databases on CD-ROMs, books with cassettes and floppy disks (more than 80 tittles). The Library operates in a modern system of barcodes with the SOWA computer programme, and has its own book collection available online.
The Wyższa Szkoła Humanistyczno-Ekonomiczna in Włocławek serves also as a cultural and advisory centre. The College runs the Language School Euroclub WSHE for inhabitants of the city of Włocławek and the surrounding areas, as well as a wide range of cultural activities (European Nights, shows of musical groups, choirs, exhibitions of artists etc.). In the academic year of 2000/2001 the College set up the Regional Centre of Language Certification enabling its students to obtain language qualifications at the international level. In this regard the College cooperates with the Goethe Institut (German) and the British Council (English).
 
 
The College also organises numerous conferences, scientific seminars and open lectures covering a wide range of subjects. These are not only aimed at students but also at all individuals who want to improve their knowledge of various subjects.
